Glen Fosslyn Droughtmaster Sale a Success
11th September, 2006
Extremely dry conditions in Southern Queensland did nothing to dampen buyer enthusiasm in what could only be described as a successful day for the Salter family's Glen Fosslyn Droughtmaster sale on Saturday.
Cattle producers from three states bid spiritedly for the line of 93 bulls at the stud's inaugural Roma sale, resulting in 88 bulls selling to average $4,670, topping at $13,000 twice and grossing $411,000.
Top money on both occasions was paid by Droughtmaster breeders Jack and Elaine Swan and their son Steven, Swan Heart Stud, The Bauhinias, Emerald, who selected four bulls during the sale at an average of $9,500.
Their first $13,000 purchase was for Lot 43, Glen Fosslyn 4006, a 22-month-old 756kg son of Calioran Isaac with growth EBV's in the top 10 percentile of the breed. Soon after, they purchased their second sale topper, Glen Fosslyn 4042, another outstanding son of Calioran Isaac who weighed in at 802kg at 21 months with sensational growth EBV's of +18, +34 and +46 respectively for 200, 400 and 600-day weights. The Swan family purchased four bulls to gross $38,000.
Lot 10, Glen Fosslyn 4066, made the second top price with the Edwards family Wolfang Stud, Clermont, paying $12,500 for yet another polled son of Calioran Isaac, who at 22 months hit the scales at 764kg with growth EBV's at +13, +35 and +38.
Frank Booth, Cowie Station, McKinlay, selected the heaviest bull in the draft. An 808kg commercial sire for $11,000. Bulk Buyers Don and Cathy Bates, Winathoola, Wallumbilla, who have previously experienced Glen Fosslyn genetics, returned to invest in another seven bulls at an average of $4,643 for a gross of $32,000.
Repeat buyers Ian and Sandra Muir, Elderslie, Winton, purchased three sires to top at $9,500 for Glen Fosslyn 4128 and average $7,500.
Long-term clients McIntosh Family Trust, Murilla South, Glenmorgan, were very happy with their selection of four bulls at an average of $5,750 and top of $7,000 for Lot 84, a 746kg 21-month-old son of Clonlara 9937 with growth EBV's in the top one percentile of the breed.
New buyers to Glen Fosslyn were Ashton Engineering, Charters Towers, who assembled a solid draft of seven bulls to gross $21,000.
Other bulk buyers included John Fegan, Penola, Julia Creek, who outlaid $22,000 for four bulls, and Braemar Investments who purchased five at an average of $4,000.
After the sale David Salter of Glen Fosslyn said he was very happy with the result for their first time offering as a single vendor. Glen Fosslyn began selling bulls the multi-vendor Roma Droughtmaster sale, then successfully sold for nine years at a combined sale with the Clonlara Stud.
