Glen Fosslyn Droughtmaster Bulls average $3,415
4th September, 2010
TWO large scale commercial beef producers took the opportunity to source bulls for value prices at the Salter families annual Glen Fosslyn Droughtmaster bull sale, Roma saleyards last Saturday.
Peter Hubbard of the Hubbard Pastoral Company at Windorah has bought bulls out of the paddock from the Salters previously, but could not go past the opportunity to acquire replacement bulls at the upset of $2500.
A total of 18 bulls were knocked down to Mr Hubbard who operates a straight Droughtmaster herd on his 11,396sq/km aggregation Galway Downs which turns off Jap Ox bullocks at 30 months of age.
His selections were based on structural correctness and reproductive soundness.
Others to capitalise on the opportunity were South Africans Louwrens and Francois Smit, Boondarra, Roma who recently relocated from West Australia bought 16 bulls for a $3218 average paying up to $5000 for a high performance son of Clonlara 06152 in Glen Fosslyn Dewar(P).
The Smits were looking for bulls with carcase qualities and quiet temperaments to join with either Santa Gertrudis, Droughtmaster and Brangus cows running in separate herds on their mainly black soil holding, Boondarra.
"We were originally intending to buy around 10 bulls, but quickly realised the value on offer so we decided to buy our full complement," said Mr Louwrens Smit.
Paul and Sally Kennedy, Dunroman, Dirranbandi outlaid the $6500 equal top money for the unregistered Glen Fosslyn Davidson, a two-year-old, 738kg son of Glen Fosslyn 05/204(P) with a lifetime daily weight gain of 1.92kg. G F Davidson also recorded 112sq cms for EMA and measured 11mm (P8) and seven millimetres for Rib.
The Kennedy family are long-term clients and also bought another bull for $3500 to use over Iron Bark blood Hereford cows.
Central Queensland studmaster Doug Miles, Trafalgar stud, Morinish secured the other high selling bull, Glen Fosslyn Dividend, a 24-month-old 702 kg polled son of Glen Fosslyn 05/224. His measurements were P8 11mm, Rib 7mm, EMA 115sq cms with a scrotal circumference of 48cms.
Other stud breeders active included Shane and Wendy Perry, Strathfield Droughtmasters, Clermont who bought Glen Fosslyn Diehard, a quality polled son of Glen Fosslyn 05/224 which was ranked in the top 10 percent of the breed for 600 day growth for $5500.
Local commercial operator seeking replacement bulls was Norm Johnston, Strathvale, Roma with five bulls for a $3900 average for a top of $4500 on three occasions and Russell Gillingham, Longvale, Wandoan who secured five bulls for a $3400 average and paid up to $4500 for Glen Fosslyn Dameon.
Both buyers appreciated the value buying throughout the catalogue given the excellent quality on offer.
Joint selling agents Landmark and Elders of Roma sold 87 bulls for a $3415 average to record a 96 percent clearance.
